Living in Spain as an American: Key Considerations

Before moving to Spain, it’s important to know what life will be like American living in Spain.

1. Safety

Spain is one of the safest countries in Europe, with low crime rates. This makes it an excellent choice for Americans moving to Spain with their families.

2. Healthcare

Spain boasts one of the best healthcare systems in Europe. Once you have obtained Spanish residency, you can access public healthcare. Expats can also choose private health insurance, which often provides shorter wait times and more personalised care.

3. Weather

With over 300 days of sunshine a year, Spain offers a diverse climate that can suit any preference. Southern Spain enjoys long, hot summers and mild winters, while cities like Madrid and Barcelona have more temperate climates.

Spanish Residency and Visa Requirements for US Citizens

If you’re wondering “Can Americans live in Spain?”, the answer is yes—US citizens can move to Spain legally, but they need to obtain the correct visa depending on their circumstances.

Types of Visas for US Citizens Moving to Spain:

  1. Non-Lucrative Visa: This visa is perfect for retirees or people with enough passive income. It lets you live in Spain without working.
  2. Work Visa: If you have a job offer from a Spanish employer, this visa lets you live and work in Spain legally.
  3. Student Visa: Americans wishing to study in Spain must obtain a student visa. You need to enroll in a recognised educational institution.
  4. Entrepreneur Visa: If you’re planning to start a business in Spain, this visa is for you.
  5. Golden Visa: For individuals who are making significant financial investments, particularly in Spanish real estate.

How to Get Spanish Residency and How to Become a Spanish Resident

If you’re planning to stay in Spain long-term, understanding how to get residency in Spain is essential.

Steps to Obtain Spanish Residency:

  • Initial Visa: Apply for the visa that best suits your situation (work, student, non-lucrative, etc.).
  • NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero): This is an essential identification number for foreigners. You need it to open a bank account, rent property, and access healthcare.
  • Residency: After living in Spain for five continuous years, you can apply for permanent residency. This grants you more rights, including the possibility to apply for Spanish citizenship after ten years.

Spain’s bureaucracy can be challenging. Keep all important documents like your passport, NIE, and visa close by. If you need help, consult a lawyer or relocation expert.

4. Embrace the Culture

Spain is known for its social lifestyle and rich traditions. Join local events, taste new foods, and enjoy the country’s festivals and customs to feel more connected.

Final Tips for Relocating to Spain from the USA

  • Tax Considerations: Spain’s Beckham Law offers tax benefits for foreign workers. Consulting with a tax advisor familiar with both US and Spanish tax laws is crucial.
  • Property Ownership: Expats can buy property in Spain. Working with a good real estate agent and lawyer is important to help with the process.

Dreaming of swapping grey British skies for sun-drenched Spanish landscapes? Moving to Spain offers an irresistible lifestyle transformation that attracts over 300,000 British expats.

This Mediterranean paradise promises not just sunshine, but a complete reimagining of daily life – where work-life balance isn’t just a concept, but a lived reality.

The country’s appeal goes far beyond beautiful beaches. With a cost of living 30-40% cheaper than the UK, exceptional healthcare ranked 7th globally, and a community-focused culture, Spain offers more than just a relocation – it promises a complete lifestyle upgrade. From the vibrant expat communities to the legendary work-life balance, moving to Spain means embracing a lifestyle where enjoying life isn’t just encouraged, it’s celebrated

This article will guide you with our top tips to help you decide to take the leap. We’ll talk about the cost of living, the beautiful cities, amazing food, and even the much-considered pros and cons of living in Spain.

1. Research About The Pros And Cons About Living In Spain

Pro

The Cost Of Living Is Low

Spain’s cost of living is not that high compared to other European countries. When you factor in the high quality of living, life in Spain makes for an excellent experience.

The Spanish Culture Is Rich And Diverse

Spain’s history dates back a thousand years. Its exploration of the world is one of the earliest. That is also why so many countries and languages in the world have Spanish influences. The history is evident today in the buildings, festivals, and holidays.

The Cities Are Simply Gorgeous

A lot of centuries-old buildings survive to this day. In some areas, even in major cities, you will find pockets of history waiting to be rediscovered. In more fortunate places in Granada, whole palaces are still alive for people to enjoy more than 700 years later.

Con

There Might Be A Language Barrier

Spaniards speak Spanish, but other official languages are spoken in certain cities, such as Catalan, Castilian, and Basque, among others. You might find it difficult to communicate with people speaking their local language. Learning Spanish and improving your language skills will be a great benefit.

2. Pick The Right City To Live In That Matches Your Lifestyle

Do you want to be a short stroll’s distance to the beach? Do you like living near ancient relics? How about the vibrant nightlife? Do you like to live in a city set at the foot of a mountain?

Spain’s many cities offer different strengths and personalities. Choosing where to live and call home is a very important decision. It’s also best to factor in the cost of living in these cities.

Here are some of Spain’s most popular cities and why you might consider moving there.

Madrid is the Capital city of Spain and is a cultural and economic centre. If you want to be close to the action of a major city, this is your go-to city.

Marbella is a beautiful city that looks into the Mediterranean sea. If you want to live in a smaller city where life is more laid back and the beach is just a few minutes walk away, pack your bags and head here.

Valencia is similar to Marbella as it also looks into the Mediterranean sea. But being the third-most populated municipality in the country, Valencia is for someone who likes the charms of Marbella and the fast pace of the big city.

Barcelona is the capital of the Catalonia region of Spain and is the country’s second-largest city in terms of population. It is a bustling metropolis perfect for those who want to live the city life.

Granada is a city near the Sierra Nevada mountains in southern Spain. It is also the province’s capital that shares its name, Granada. The city is smaller with a more laid-back lifestyle, but it has a rich history and some of the country’s best historical sites.

3. Learn As Much As You Can About The Cost Of Living In The City You Choose

As with many developed countries, there are expensive and cheaper cities to choose from. Doing ample research could mean saving up to 500 EUR in rent for the same small one-bedroom apartment. Aside from the relative cost of a city, where you live in that city will also drastically change your monthly cost of living, especially when it comes to renting.

The cost of living in larger cities is also equally high. In Madrid and Barcelona, the average cost of living is around 700 EUR before rent. A one-bedroom apartment will then fetch anywhere between 600 to 1300 EUR.

The average cost of living in the cheaper cities is around 600 EUR. However, rent for an apartment good for a single person can go as low as 350 EUR.

So, choosing where to live makes a huge difference in what you need to budget for, so always keep that in mind!

4. Keep An Eye On Spain’s Top Industries And Secure A Job To Be Able To Stay Long Term

If you plan on staying in Spain long-term, it is best to get a Job. If you have a work permit or a por cuenta ajena, it will allow you to get a working visa or a visado de residencia y trabajo.

This will allow you to stay in Spain longer and build your life there. To help you out, these are some of the most booming industries and job markets in Spain today.

  • Aerospace
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Education – Teaching English
  • Web Technologies
  • Agriculture
  • Tourism

5. Be Sure You Set Up Your Número De Identidad De Extranjero

Número De Identidad De Extranjero (NIE) directly translates to Number Identification Foreigner. All expats must acquire an NIE, and it is an essential requirement to be able to live in Spain.

This number is used in many important documents and transactions. It is used in major purchases, opening bank accounts, paying taxes, attending university, applying for a driver’s licence, and so much more. If you plan on living in Spain as more than just a week-long tourist, you need an NIE.

Luckily, applying for one is not that hard and can be done online, so you won’t have any issues.

6. You Can Pursue A Higher Education In One Of Spain’s Excellent Universities For More Job Opportunities

Whether you want to master your current industry or penetrate a new field, pursuing a higher education might be a good idea. Spain’s educational system is excellent, and you can choose from several universities and colleges to up-skill.

  • University of Barcelona
  • Autonomous University of Barcelona
  • Autonomous University of Madrid
  • University of Valencia
  • University of Granada
  • Complutense University of Madrid

7. Observe The Little Cultural Details And Social Etiquette

When moving to a new country, there will always be a little bit of a culture shock. To help you out with some social interactions, here are some tips you might want to take note of.

  • Tipping in Spain is not compulsory. You can even leave the coins you receive as change, which can serve the gratuity. If you especially like the service, you may leave more.
  • People might mention Pagar a pachas when going out or paying by half. This means people will divide the bill equally, and everyone gets to pitch in the same amount. This type of arrangement is particularly popular with young people.
  • Being late isn’t that much of a big deal. You’ll probably hear someone just say “no pasa nada”, which loosely translates to “don’t worry about it” and that’ll be the end of it. However, if the event is very important or it can’t start without you, try to be on time.
  • Eating times are a bit late. La Comida, the main meal, is usually around 2 pm, although it can sometimes go as late as 4 pm. La Cena, or dinner, won’t even start before 9 pm. If it’s the weekend, expect the food to be served even later.

8. Always Treat Yourself To A Well Deserved Vacation In These Top Tourist Spots

Spain is home to the Pyrenees, Sierra Nevada, and Cordillera Cantabria mountain ranges, to name a few. It also has a 1,600-kilometre coastline into the pristine waters of the Mediterranean sea.

Spain has dozens of top go-to destinations between the sea and the mountains that you should not miss. Treat yourself to a regular trip, and don’t be a stranger to this beautiful country.

Here are some of the best spots we recommend you visit asap:

Alhambra and Generalife is a 13th-century palace complex in the city of Granada. It is one of the most famous and well-preserved examples of Islamic Architecture from the historical time period.

Sagrada Familia is a cathedral in the heart of Barcelona and one of Spain’s most famous buildings.

Guggenheim Museum is a museum of modern and contemporary art in Bilbao

Below, we will share three essential points you can do to help you prepare for the relocation. These hacks are practical yet effective, and you need to know them before heading to the airport.

Make A Checklist

Do not stress yourself trying to memorise all the things you need for the relocation process. Make a checklist that includes everything you have to do and the items you need.

Here are some of the pointers you can include in your checklist:

  • things to do,
  • documents, moving essentials,
  • securing a home,
  • items to donate or sell,
  • making a budget,
  • a list of travel precautions, and
  • a relocation timeline.

You can modify these pointers as needed. Make sure to create this list to start your moving process or after you get a job in Dubai. Download our Moving Checklist to stay on track!

Calculate The Budget

When budgeting for moving, calculate the costs for preparation, the move itself, and after the move.

Make sure you have a post-move budget set up. This budget includes your transport fare upon arrival in Dubai. It also includes your living expenses (cost of living) for your first month or until you receive your salary.

Contact The Important Parties

Reach out to your real estate agent or employer a few weeks before your move date. This way, they can prepare any essentials before your arrival.

You can also confirm any essentials you need to bring with you to Dubai. Always prepare ahead of your moving day to avoid unwelcome situations.

Singapore is an internationally renowned hotspot for tourism and expat employment. Singapore often ranks in the top five most desirable relocations.

Making an international move from the UK to Singapore has its challenges. Knowing where to start is vital to align your expectations and preparations. Relocating is a huge decision; you must consider your health insurance, education, employment, security, and other things. Before relocating from the UK to Singapore, you should be well-informed and well-equipped.

1. Secure Your Employment Pass

Singapore has a healthy, vibrant, and highly competitive employment market. If you’re moving to Singapore from the United Kingdom, chances are you are going there for work. Singapore prioritises permanent residents, but expats with longer passes get the edge.

Singapore offers a structured framework for foreign nationals seeking employment opportunities. The two primary work visa options for temporary stays are:

  • Employment Pass (EP): This visa is for skilled professionals earning a good salary (at least S$5,000 per month currently). It allows you to work for the length of your job contract, usually up to 3 years, with the chance to renew.
  • S Pass: This visa is for mid-skilled workers with a specific salary requirement (which can change). Valid for as long as your job contract lasts, with a maximum of 2 years and the possibility of renewal.

Remember: You’ll need a job offer from a Singapore company before applying for either visa. They’ll usually help you with the application process.

Your experience with well-known companies like Barclays, British Telecom, or Rolls-Royce is an asset! Here’s why:

  • UK firms in Singapore: Many British companies, including these examples, have offices in Singapore.
  • Matching skills: Your existing experience could be a perfect fit for similar jobs with these companies in Singapore.
  • Easier transition: Since you’re already familiar with the company culture, it could be a smoother move for you.

So, if you’re interested in working in Singapore, consider applying directly to these companies’ Singapore offices! You can leverage your existing experience and potentially apply for jobs directly with them in Singapore.

Planning on staying longer than a year? The Employment Pass is better for extended stays because it’s valid for longer.

Did you know we can assist you in finding the right visa for you?

2. Make Sure You’re Not Travelling With Controlled Items

You might be setting your sights on travelling after you have secured your work pass and got all your documents ready. Note that Singapore has a specific list of controlled items you should avoid carrying while travelling. The following are:

  • Chewing gum
  • Gun-shaped cigarette lighters
  • Fireworks of any type
  • Endangered species of wildlife and associated by-products
  • Chewing tobacco, imitation tobacco products and other tobacco products
  • Controlled drugs

3. Use Your Employment Pass To Secure A Bank Account

In Singapore you can obtain a bank account in multiple ways. You can apply directly at one of the banks’ branches.

Online applications are available where you fill out forms and upload documents. Some banks require proof of employment or income, and any work pass will serve as proof of employment. Others accept self-employed applicants without any documentation.

If you’re in a bind and need physical cash, you can use your existing card to withdraw money from ATMs. However, most ATMs belong to the M1 network, which uses MasterCard International Inc.’s Maestro system. Most banks issue their own plastic cards, called “local bank cards,” which usually work at ATMs within the same network. These cards function exclusively with a designated account, ensuring maximum security.

Credit and debit cards are a widely accepted payment method, allowing you to shop with ease almost anywhere. Visa Inc. and American Express Co. are among the major issuers of credit cards. Debit cards act as a direct link to your bank account. Many businesses widely accept debit cards for contactless transactions.

4. No Drop In Quality Of Education

Education is one of the biggest worries for students and parents alike.

Singapore ranks 7th out of 50 countries in the Global Expat Survey 2018. In the education category, Singapore scored highly for having “an excellent education system”. This is because the country provides public and private schools for students aged 3 to 18.

The government spends around 4 billion SGD (2.4 billion GBP) annually on education. This spending covers the costs of schools (both primary and secondary) and universities. Your education is in good hands.

5. Singlish Will Shorten Your Conversation Time

As you enter Singapore, you’ll happily notice that most of them speak in English. You might hear what sounds like a strong accent at first. But soon, you’ll notice unique words and phrases like “nehmind” (meaning “nevermind”) or “dowan” (meaning “I don’t want it”). These are examples of Singlish, a fun way of speaking English that uses shortened words and phrases!

Singapore has four official languages: English, Singaporean Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil. You can converse with the populace easily, as around 48% speak English. In comparison, about 30% speak Mandarin, followed by Malay at around 9% and Tamil at around 3%. With this amount of English speakers, it’s easy to find one just around the corner.

6. Clean, Spotless, And Affordable Public Transport

Singapore’s primary means of public transport are the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) and the bus. During your first weeks in Singapore, it’s best to familiarise yourself with the place. Taking the bus might be a familiar sight as double-deckers and bendy buses grace the highways.

Around 40% of Singaporeans take the MRT, and you might want to take it too, as it usually costs 2.48 SGD (1.49 GPB) per journey compared to the UK’s 10.66 SGD (6.40 GPB) tickets. Owning an EZ-Link card helps ease transportation payments. Some shops and restaurants also accept this card as a mode of payment.

Singapore’s government doesn’t allow eating and drinking on their train. Singapore keeps their subway cars clean, so no more finding food wrappers or smelly food stains on trains.

7. Private Transport

Maybe all this discussion about public transport makes you want your own car. Owning a vehicle is a necessity in most cases. Especially, if you prefer driving in the comfort of your car.

To do that, you need to bid on a Certificate of Entitlement. This certificate entitles you to operate a vehicle for ten years. Singapore imposed this to motivate people to own vehicles, thus lessening road congestion.

City planning is challenging as there is little landmass to work around. Thus, their government tries to work around traffic and eliminate the chances of road congestion.

8. Plan Your Way Around The City

After you have chosen a mode of transportation, make sure you plan your way around the city. Familiarise yourself with key locations. This includes pinpointing local eateries, shopping centres, and perhaps even bustling market stalls. You might want to try every local dish on your first week, but note that you will stay for quite a bit; you still have time to do everything you want.

If you are feeling a bit homesick, you can try British restaurants such as Windsor Arms, The British Club, and Smiths Fish and Chips. All these provide you with a hint of the UK while in Singapore.

Getting distracted is easy, there are countless exciting things waiting around the corner. Planning ahead or marking locations on your map can make your travel easier when you first arrive in Singapore. When you first arrive in Singapore, having a simple plan can make it easier to get around the city. Marking spots on your map before your trip can save you time and stress when exploring Singapore for the first time.

9. Predictable Year-Round Weather

Singapore’s location makes it a great starting point for exploring Southeast Asia. Nothing’s stopping you from taking a weekend off at neighbouring places such as Bali, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Singapore has a hot and humid tropical climate (84% average humidity) with two annual monsoons. The Northeast Monsoon Season occurs from December to March, while the Southwest Monsoon Season is from June to September.

The UK’s cooler temperatures likely had you reaching for jackets regularly. Singapore has a predictable weather that ranges around 25 to 31 °C, so, no need to pack your thickest winter jackets.

The Northeast Monsoon also has a wet phase from December to January and a dry phase from February to March. During the wet phase, you would witness continuous moderate to heavy rainfall, while the dry phase is pleasant with little or no rain. Planning your outings is easier as the weather is more predictable.

10. Full Control Of Health Care

The NHS (National Health Service) has issues regarding its long waiting lists for special treatments when you want to use your health insurance card. Singapore has MediShield, a type of health insurance for larger hospital bills. MediSave is a mandatory savings plan, and MediFund is for citizens who cannot cover their hospital bills. Processing is smoother because of the multiple programs available.

With Permanent Residency, you become eligible to enjoy Singapore’s comprehensive healthcare benefits. Short-term visitors can get coverage through employer-provided international health insurance or by purchasing their own plan.

Taxes fund Singapore’s healthcare. The Singapore government aims to give you more control over the care given to you. With full control over your healthcare, you choose the treatments and medications that are right for you.

11. Singapore Is Ideal For Expats

The expat population in Singapore is around 29% of the total population. With so many expats, it’s natural to find comfort by connecting with others from your home country. If you’re moving to Singapore alone, you might want to visit these communities.

Singapore is a melting pot of different cultures. Singapore’s status as one of the safest countries for expats further fuels the vibrant mix of cultures. You can join any expat community and be on your way to making friends and learning more about living in Singapore.
